A day trip to Northern Okinawa. When people imagine Okinawa, it’s usually blue sky, nice beach and beautiful emerald green ocean, but even winter and weather is not so great. You still can enjoy Okinawa.
Going to a famous pizzeria
It takes approximately 1hour and 10 minutes by car from Naha. On the road we decided to stop by for a pizza in a popular restaurant called Pizza in the sky (ピザ喫茶 花人方 in Japanese). As the name implies the restaurant is located in mountains and offers a relaxing dining atmosphere in a beautiful Japanese-styled (was it??) wooden house. Pizza in the sky cherishes beauty and everything from the garden to the tableware and menu (and even the toilet!) it is a feast for the eyes. As for the most important part, the pizza was one of the best I have had in Japan!
Delicious pizza, cool drinks, and menu.
Just look at the amount of that cheese! Yummy!
Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium
The Churaumi Aquarium is located in the northern part of Okinawa Main Island. Being the main attraction of the Ocean Expo Park, which consists of a botanical garden, a beach, the Oceanic Culture Museum and the Ocean Native Village. Churaumi Aquarium was the largest aquarium in the world before exceeded by the Georgia Aquarium in 2005. It still serves as one of the most popular tourist attractions in Okinawa and we went to see if the place still has what it takes to impress people in year 2017.
Invitation to the Great Sea “Life in the Inoh” ( Touch Pool)
The aquarium also offers activities! You can touch sea pickles and starfish. I hope they do not mind, though.
Journey to Coral Reef
Journey to Kuroshio Ocean Current
The highlight of the visit is the tank, named Kuroshio Sea. The tank inhabits manta rays, various fish, as well as two whale sharks. I have never seen such a big animal! People are gathered in front of the tank, waiting to experience the dream-like moment of the bypass of the magnificent creature.
Exploring the Kuroshio Sea Tank
One Corner is Reserved for Introducing Sharks. Yikes!
Despise the fact that we visited the aquarium on Sunday evening the place was crowded with people. If you are aiming for a relaxing moment, or perhaps a romantic date, visiting the aquarium on a weekday is highly recommended.
The name of the Churaumi aquarium is a combination of the Okinawan dialect/language, chura standing for beautiful, and the standard Japanese, umi meaning the ocean. If you want to increase your Okinawan vocabulary and by this impress and show your respect for the locals, keep your eyes open for these kinds of little hints!
